The referral program has changed since this thread started. The person you referred has to verify their email address and start leveling. You will get 40 free food each time that person levels, up to a maximum of 400 free food. The new player still gets 1000 gold.

you make the enter the referral code somewhat hard. This was unexpected. Players have to jump hoops to find the button. And one has to explain clearly. Perhaps another substitute is that: to enter referral code only when a new player joins up at the creation screen. Offer a one time chance to enter referral code there. If someone really referred them there, it is justified at this point to know the code.

I agree with this. There should be a way of sending a link and/or email to friends. When your friends click the link, they're brought to a page where they can create an account, select their device iOS/Android/Windows, and enter their mobile number if they choose to use the mobile version. If they enter their mobile number then they get a link which brings them to the download page for the app. Basically just seamlessly integrate the referral code into the signup process so the new players don't have to enter the code manually.

This would be a much better method than throwing the option up when the new player is in the middle of playing.

I think it would also be a good idea to enter a code late. So if a new player wasn't referred by anybody, other players can pick them up as a referral while they're still under level 11. I think this would be beneficial for the new players because if they weren't referred by somebody, they've missed out on the chance to have an extra mentor since it's in the referrer's best interest to help the new player out.

They've changed how the referral system works. You don't get a lump sum of 400 food for a referral anymore. You get 40 food per level your referred player earns, up through level 10. If they reach level 11, you get a special reward. See link.
