Video Tutorials for Beginners

Post by Gilby3000 on Wed Aug 25, 2010 8:43 am

The latest Update Hut post just went up which talks about the new video tutorials for beginners. There is also a link to them on the main page of the PK Guide.

Take a look at them and let new players know about them too.

:D

Yeah the videos were great and they seem like they would make the game a lot less overwhelming and confusing for new players.

I love the video tutorials! I do, however, have some suggestions regarding the last tutorial on trading.

    1. The tutorial says "In this case, the trade post will add a 10% commission." -- leave out the "in this case" because the trade post always adds a 10% commission.
    2. "...so if you change your mind, retrieve your items quickly." add: "Items not sold in 2 weeks are returned to you."
    3. "If you are scammed out of something in PK, there is nothing anyone can do to get it back. It is lost for good." add: ""If you don't want to risk being scammed, meet your prospective buyer or seller at a quiet, smaller trade post and perform your trade through that trade post.'

I think the last suggestion is the most important because otherwise the last thing a new player hears is that he or she can be scammed and no on can do anything about it.

I believe the tutorials are very good and will be useful for new players. I'd also think an advice video would be useful and maybe a what to do as you get higher level would be useful.
Emphasize things like how to get more food once you run out if you don't want to spend money. Honestly, I understand that the makers of the game in the end would really like players to spend money. But the best way to do this is not to force it on them but instead to get a player addicted on the game and then see how they can progress quicker with spending money. So, early on alot of players run out of food and see the only means to get more food as spending money and this actually turns them off and they just quit. Instead if you point out how easy it is to get the needed food (mainly for leveling early on) utilizing mats such as wood and leather they will be less prone to quit and in the end make the game more money.
Recommendations of skill choices based on what a user is interested in doing. For example if a user likes to travel around then at level 5 unlocking troodent and getting a skill point in it becomes very useful. This is also useful for farmers as they can farm mines much easier when they can see where they are on the map.
An explanation about leveling weapons and getting to 1% to do so and what happens when it breaks is also a useful detail.
Getting log cabin up to house (I think what it becomes) so that you can drop items when run out of space in inventory and come back for it later. At beginning you have minimal backpacks and this really helps to offset that.
There are some others but again I think it could be a what to do now as I got the very basics what else do I need to know. Guide reading, forum viewing (way underemphasized in this game imho), etc. Maybe do a video called I got basics now what else should I know.
